Real World Evidence & Health Inequality: Bridge the Gap

There is a growing interest regarding the emerging role of RealWorldEvidence (RWE) in the value assessment and decision making for innovation in healthcare. A recent article by Sarri G., published in Frontiers in Pharmacology, addressed the very important issue of Health Inequality as indicated by the article title: “Can Real-World Evidence Help Restore Decades of Health Inequalities by Informing Health Care Decision-Making? Certainly, and Here is How”.
Several recent developments, such as the adoption of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) allow the broader and reliable use of RWE in decision making in healthcare. COVID-19 pandemic also highlighted the increasing need for an accelerated but at the same time secure access to novel medicaiton & technologies. In addition, Randomized Controlled Trials often fails to reflect the heterogeneity observed in real-life setting, attributed to the strict study design.
This article emphasizes that RWE may serve as a useful platform to demonstrate the unmet needs of the most disadvantaged patient groups, thus impacting the decision-making of key stakeholders in healthcare setting via further empowering the HTA processes. In this well-written article, the author provides interesting suggestions and future considerations on how this could be achieved and what are the expected outcomes.
